由自由空間教育基金會所主辦的第九屆通用設計獎，經過了三個多月的全台校園巡迴演講後，於九月十五日正式開放投稿。

本次參賽主題「坐」，結合通用設計的核心理念:「體會不同類型的人各種不同的需求，創造出真正能為人帶來幸福的設計」，令許多優秀的工業設計、建築系所的人才躍躍欲試。

上屆比賽，由台灣科技大學的學生團隊奪得首獎，作品「嬰兒車座椅」，發想出可從嬰兒車中拉出折疊椅讓母親也可坐下休息的設計，實用且受歡迎的概念大受評審好評。

當然除了概念發想，作品同時兼具可製造性對參賽者也是一大挑戰。例如第五屆作品「貼心餐椅」，四腳底下皆有滾珠設計，可以輕鬆移動，當有重量落下時，滾珠會被壓進椅腳中，讓椅子固定在地上。這是由交通大學碩班的同學所設計。不過由於為了讓滾珠移動所設計的輕量化，造成如果人還位坐定，椅子就被腿部往後推。即便如此。主辦單位依舊讓這位交通大學碩士班的同學獲得貳獎。
