汽油價格為何下跌？因為原油價格下跌。那麼真正的問題應是，原油價格為何下跌？

儘管因利比亞衝突，原油價格近來上漲，但基本上，自6月以來，原油價格的跌勢，宛如自由落體，大跌了約48%，可能創下自2008年以來最大年度跌幅。近來1%的漲勢不太可能持續。分析師說，市場早已知道利比亞的風險，應不足以反轉任何主要趨勢。

油價為何下跌？基本上是供需問題。需求方面，全球經濟活動疲弱。美國經濟或許正在復甦，但歐洲卻再度落入衰退，亞洲看來不夠強勁，新興市場亦不復當年。

供給方面，全球生產大量燃料。由於頁岩油的開採，美國正值能源榮景，且已躍居全球最大原油生產國。而OPEC卻不以為意，堅決拒絕減產。

這意味，市場有大量原油，需求卻不多。

一項重要的問題是，原油還會持續下跌多久？

有分析師預期原油將下跌至每桶50美元。這意味汽油價格將跌破每加侖2.50美元，亦即汽油價格可能持續下跌至2015年。
